Ten Houses, Ten Visions
Each House has a distinct identity that is shaped in part by the Faculty Head of House and his or her vision for the House, by the staff of Resident Advisers and student affairs professionals who work closely with students and faculty, and by the first year students who live and learn together. Houses are known for theirmottos such as "West is best" or "North House rocks" and for their regularly scheduled get-togethers such as the Fireside Chats in East, Sutherland's Cafecito and Gillette's Gelato night. Most rooms in The Commons are doubles, with some triples. Housing is assigned randomly during the July prior to Move-In Day.
Safety, Health and Wellness, Floor Community, and Student Resident Advisers
Each floor of The Ingram Commons has a Resident Adviser, an undergraduate or graduate student who is appointed through a competitive process to live in the House and serve as role models and peer mentors to first year students. There are 49 RAs in The Commons. Residential student affairs professionals supervise them. RAs assure 24/7 coverage of student welfare, support the educational programming of their Houses by working closely with their Faculty Heads of Houses, serve as peer mentors to residents on their floors, and build floor community in each House.
Student House Officers and House Advisory Councils
Each House has an elected House Advisory Council, made up of a president, vice-president, secretary, community service liaison, and representatives from each floor. The House Advisory Council meets with the Faculty Head of House and Head Resident Adviser to advise on House programming and the life of the House. House Presidents also serve as representatives of their Houses in Vanderbilt Student Government. All House presidents are also members of the House Presidents Council and meet regularly with the Dean of The Commons. In addition, 20 first-year students compete to be a member of the CommonDores Programming Council (CPC). The CPC works with Vanderbilt Student Governmentofficers and professional staff to advise on the expenditure of a budget supplied by The Ingram Commons to enhance inter-House, Commons-wide, and campus-wideliving-learning initiatives.
The Commons Cup
Just as Hogwarts has its House Cup, The Commons has the Commons Cup with Houses competing against each other in academics, intramural sports, House involvement, community involvement and sustainability. The Commons Cup is awarded at the Commons Carnival on the last day of classes.
Common Place is the best resource for all the latest happenings on The Commons. It's a digital news and event hub used by faculty, staff and students to post information, participate in discussions and sign up for events. See http://commonplace.vanderbilt.edu/
